Why
Buy Your Newfoundland from a Breeder
There
is a big difference between a “breeder” and a
“puppy
mill” or “dog dealer.” Good breeders have
a sincere
interest in the improvement and development of the Newfoundland. They
plan matings between good quality individuals, with the intention of
producing puppies to keep for themselves. The other puppies are offered
for sale. Breeders sell a few of their top quality puppies for showing
or breeding purposes, but most of them are available as family
companions.. On the other hand the “puppy miller”
is
someone who just produces dogs only for the sale – often in
quite
large numbers! The “dog dealer” buys and sells, the
quicker
the better! Neither cares much about quality or temperament. The retail
pet business is big business, and many of the animals commercially
offered for sale are produced at large puppy-farms. Some of theses
farms are located in Canada, but the most part are located in the
United States where little dogs are largely imported! Not all of these
puppies are purebred or in good health. Even if some of them are
purebred, it can be difficult for the owner to obtain a CKC
registration certificate, especially for imported dogs.

Too
expensive?
Once breeders are actually assured that the buyer is truly
interested in the breed, most will sell their puppies at a reasonable
price, probably less expensive than a pet shop. “I just want
a
pet – not a show dog!” Tell the breeder that. Even
if the
price of a good puppy or an older dog is a little more elevated, divide
the difference over the number of years that you will enjoy owning a
good quality Newfoundland. What is wrong with having a pet that has a
family tree full of prestigious relatives? Remember that to obtain
these titles, a dog needs to not only have good conformation and
intelligence, it has to also be well adjusted, stable and able to cope
with traveling, competitions, spectators and other dogs. Judges
don’t award blue ribbons to dogs that panic or growl; so you
stand a better chance of getting a dog with a good temperament whose
family has long since proven themselves!
Reputed breeders usually provide advice and guarantees on their puppies
– puppies that are healthy and home-raised with a lot of TLC!
Don’t be surprised if before selling you a dog, breeders ask
you
more questions than you ask them. They just want to be assured that
their dogs are going to be well treated and appreciated.
